What is Tricolsan and why should I avoid it?
Many household disinfectants, antiseptic soaps, and cleansers contain toxic and persistent synthetic pesticides. One of the most disturbing of these is Triclosan, which is found in all antibacterial liquid soaps and many common household products including deodorants, toothpaste, and plastics.
Triclosan and the closely related Triclocarban are antibacterial and preservatives chemicals that have been used in consumer products for over 30 years. They are found in over 76% of all liquid soaps and 26% of bar soaps as well as many other products including toothpaste, deodorants, and plastics. Several million pounds of Triclosan and Triclocarban end up in several billion dollars worth of consumer products annually, and then most of it is washed down the drain and out into the environment.
Recent studies from Johns Hopkins have found than most of these chemicals pass through our wastewater treatment bound to the sludge where it is concentrated and sold as "biosolids," a fertilizer that has been widely used on cropland throughout the country for over 20 years. The result is that Triclosan, Triclocarban, and the toxic degradation products, dioxins, have become ubiquitous in the environment, our water supply, our food supply, and our bodies.
Triclosan facts:
- Triclosan and Triclocarban are potent endocrine disruptors including thyroid and the sex hormone estrogen and androgen.
- Chemicals that disrupt sex hormones have been implicated in early onset of puberty, breast cancer, and other malignancies.
- A recent study by the CDC found Triclosan in the urine of 76% of Americans and essentially all little girls. These chemicals accumulate in fatty tissues and are very slowly cleared.
- Throughout its lifecycle, Triclosan degrades to dioxins, which are among the most toxic and carcinogenic chemicals known. Like Triclosan itself, dioxins accumulate in the fatty tissues such as breast tissue where they predispose to developing cancer.
- The process of degradation to dioxins is accelerated by the presence of light and moisture.
