Book Review: Healthy Mum, Happy Baby

I discovered this gem of a book this past Spring during my weekly trip to the library with the kids. While browsing the parenting section, this book caught my eye. I am breastfeeding my youngest and at the time was having some issues with what to eat, not eating enough etc. So I checked it out, and was so happy I did.

As most breastfeeding moms know, breastfeeding can make you constantly hungry. I had not exerienced this the first time around so I was not quite sure what was happening. When I started flipping through the book, I came across this sentence and was hooked:

"...when I started breastfeeding, , eating for two became a chore, a trial, a bodily necessity that I couldn't seem to satisfy."

This summed up perfectly what I was feeling.

Annemarie Tempelman-Kluit, a mom of two, writes in a way where you feel as if you are talking with a girlfriend rather than reading a "textbook" about breastfeeding. The book is written with humor and wit, but most importantly it is packed with the need-to-know info such as breastfeeding myths, what to avoid, the building blocks of what your diet should be, organic foods and so much more great info.

One of the best parts of the book is the recipe section! Tempelman-Kluit gathered some great recipes (I have tried quite a few and they have all been yummy!). The recipes are arranged in three sections: Breakfast and Snacks, Small Meals, and Main Meals. They are simple, quick and do not call for 50 different ingredients. Alot of the ingredients are things you probably already have in your kitchen.

I found myself referring back to this book so much that I went out and purchased my own copy! You can borrow this book from your library as well, or better yet, purchase it online from either of these retailers:

Amazon.ca
chapters.indigo.ca

I highly recommend this book to any breastfeeding mom or mom-to-be. It would also make a great gift!
